Registering for Research and other Variable Units

Research (CHE 99, CHE 199, CHE 194)

In order to register for research units, students need to complete the Variable Unit Request Form as well as the UC Laboratory Safety Fundamentals. The completed form and certificate of completion can be emailed to chemundergrads@ucdavis.edu.

If needed, please follow the below steps to complete the UC Laboratory Safety Fundamentals training.

  • Send an email message to sdps@ucdavis.edu and ask that you be given access to the training program. Be sure to leave them your full name, student ID number, and UC Davis email address.
  • Once you have been granted access, go to lms.ucdavis.edu from your browser to login.
  • Search for the ECOURSE titled "UC Laboratory Safety Fundamentals." You may then begin the training by clicking on the "Start" button. The training takes about 90 minutes, and you can stop and restart the training from where you left off as needed.
  • Upon completion of the training, save your certificate and submit it along with the Variable Unit Request Form.

Other Variable Units (CHE 98, CHE 198, and CHE 192)

CHE 98/198 are for independent projects. These are typically done with a faculty member who can authorize these units. Student should complete the Variable Unit Request Form and email it to chemundergrads@ucdavis.edu.

Che 192 is for internships. If you would like to see if you are eligible for CHE 192, please email your internship offer letter to chemundergrads@ucdavis.edu.
