Submarine Volcanic Eruptions

Dr. Michael Manga

Professor
Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences
UC Berkeley

Most volcanism occurs under the sea and thus we very rarely get to directly observe submarine eruptions. Over the past decade, however, by exploring the oceans and using satellites we are developing a better understanding of submarine volcanic eruptions.

Dr. Michael Manga will describe new discoveries and some of the ways in which underwater
volcanoes erupt differently than those on land and have very different consequences.
