Department PTA Policy

PTA Policy

We always do our best to provide as many seats in CHE courses as we can, and often increase the maximum capacity of courses with large waitlists (depending on classroom size and TA/instructor resources). Students who wish to have full time status need to be enrolled in 12 units. If you are trying to get into a course that is full, the best option is to get on the waitlist and also find a backup class in case you are not able to get in.

For CHE 2ABC, 8B, 118BC, once the quarter starts, PTAs are only issued by Head TAs. Here is the process for these cases.

For all other CHE classes, PTAs are issued at the discretion of the Instructor of Record. Here is
the process for these cases:

  • You need to email the Instructor of Record of the class you want to register for. Explain your situation and ask them if they would approve a PTA for you.
  • If they agree, ask them to email a Chemistry Department staff advisor with their approval.
  • The staff advisor will review the case to make sure that the classroom can accommodate an extra student.
  • If the classroom can accommodate your enrollment, the staff member will reach out to you with a PTA number.
