Chemistry Placement Exam

There are two methods for registering for this online exam:

#1. Registration through course registration

Students who are registered or waitlisted in CHE 2A, 2AH, or WLD 41C who have not satisfied the Chemistry Placement Requirement are automatically registered for the Chemistry Placement Exam.  These students will be notified via email regarding when they will be able to take the exam. Exam notifications are sent roughly one week prior to the beginning of the testing period and include a link to the exam as well as login information.  Students who have also not satisfied the Math Placement Requirement will also be notified in the same manner.

#2. Manual Registration

l Registration is only available during the periods listed below. If you are not currently enrolled in one of these courses but would like to register to take this exam, fill out our Chemistry manual registration form. If you are not currently enrolled in a calculus course please see the Math Placement Exam page regarding manual registration.

1st Manual Registration Period for Winter 2015 Testing:

Chemistry Placement Requirement

All students who register in CHE 2A and CHE 2AH are required to take the Chemistry Placement Exam and the Math Placement Exam. We will no longer accept SAT, AP, IB scores or previous General Chemistry or Math coursework taken at another college as exemptions from our examinations. The Chemistry Placement Exam and the Mathematics Placement Exam are not meant to test whether students can earn high scores; rather, they are designed to assess one's abilty to succeed at the college level.

*NOTE: Students who choose to enroll and pass Workload Chemistry 41C (WLD 41C) are allowed to take CHE 2A or CHE 2AH without taking the Chemistry Placement Exam. However, these students are still required to take and earn a qualifying score from the Math Placement Exam if they have not previously done so.

Chemistry Placement Examination

The Chemistry Placement Examination is only available online. There are two testing sessions per quarter that CHE 2A and/or CHE 2AH is offered. Students may only take the exam once per testing session. As with any exam, if you need special accommodations due to a disability, please contact the UC Davis Student Disabilities Center.

The Chemistry Placement Exam sessions match the same dates as the Math Placement Exam sessions. Upcoming exam sessions are:

First Testing Session: December 2-11, 2014 (Window opens at 1:00p on December 2; Closes at 1:00p on December 11)

Second Testing Session: January 5-13, 2015 (Window opens at 1:00p on January 5; Closes at 1:00p on January 13)

Score Requirements

Students must meet the required minimum scores for enrollment in CHE 2A and CHE 2AH.

35 w/ Trig score of 3

Students enrolled in one of the above classes without satisfying the Chemistry Placement Requirement will be administratively dropped from the course no matter what anyone else, including an adviser or an instructor, may have told them. Exemptions to the Chemistry Placement Requirement are not granted.

Alternative Course Suggestions in Chemistry

If you do not initially meet the placement requirements to enroll in CHE 2A or CHE 2AH, this may mean that you should invest time in a preparatory course in chemistry to help develop or refresh necessary learning skills. We suggest taking either one of the following courses:

Workload Chemistry 41C (WLD 41C) - While students who do not pass the Chemistry Placement Exam to enroll in CHE 2A or 2AH can choose to retake the exam until they pass it, they can also elect to enroll in WLD 41C. If you opt to enroll in WLD 41C, please note that this course is only offered during the Fall quarter. Students who pass WLD 41C with a grade of 'P' or 'C' or better can enroll in CHE 2A or CHE 2AH without taking the Chemistry Placement Exam again. However, these students must still take and pass the Math Placement Exam. Taking and passing a Workload Math course DOES NOT replace passing the Math Placement Exam for the purposes of enrollment in CHE 2A or CHE 2AH.

CHE 10 (Concepts in Chemistry) - This is a lecture-based, 4 unit survey course that takes students through basic concepts and applications in chemistry. It is only offered in the Fall quarter. While this course's primary function is to serve non-science majors, CHE 10 can help science majors refresh their interest in chemistry. Students who take CHE 10 can enroll in CHE 2A or CHE 2AH, but do note that passing CHE 10 does not waive the placement requirements to ensure enrollment in CHE 2A or CHE 2AH. Student are still subject to taking and earning a qualifying score on the Chemistry Placement Exam and the Math Placement Exam. Additionally, CHE 10 should not be viewed as a preparatory course for CHE 2A or CHE 2AH. If you are seeking to re-establish your skill set in chemistry, taking WLD 41C is recommended.

Nearly 10,000 students will be taking General Chemistry in the 2014-15 year.  Please refer to the Chemistry Placement Exam FAQs page for frequently asked questions prior to contacting us.
